  • AA speedo cable and housing.

Well, working on the big yellow AA today was wondering why the speedo didn't work.

So, I pull the speedo out to find it works great, but the cable has this huge kink that has actually broken the housing right at the top where the twist comes to the sleeve. I seriously can't understand how someone can do that kind of damage to the housing. Now, I can see how a cable would break from being all dried out and rusty, but this is ridiculous.

Anyway, back to the posting. I believe we are now looking for a complete speedo cable and housing for this '29AA with the oval speedo.

Mark may chime in on this as it is his truck.

Oh, if someone can verify the length at 113", I see Bratton's carries them. Might not need this call out.

Thanks SS, I'll keep an eye out for your posting the length.

Well, just learned from Bratton's today that the full cables are not in stock and no word on when they might get any, so back to square one. Still need a 113" speedo cable for a early "30 AA. I will be making some calls tomorrow, so this is subject to change and I will update as needed.

113" seems to long, he parts book shows 113.5" for the long wheel base trucks.

None to be found !! Any help, mine is either 85 or 89" long depending on catalogs. Pat

Pat, you win the prize! After careful measuring we have determined it is indeed only 83" or so. So something that longer or a wee bit more would do the job. And it looks like Bratton's carries an 89"er. So I hope they have something in stock.

According to this chart in a old Ford parts book, all 28-29 trucks used the 82.20" cable.
The longer cables were used on the 30-31 trucks.
I see NOS Ford truck inner cables on Ebay from time to time, the outer housing will be a challenge to find.

When buying cables for a oval speedometer, keep in mind that the ends of the inner cables are larger than the 30-31 and modern cables. If you put a 30-31 or modern smaller cable in your oval speedometer, it might work at first but it will quit working after a couple hundred miles when the corners wear off the cable.

I have a good cable housing that is 81.5" in length, which is most likely what you are looking for. It does not have the cable inside. $20 for it. I will be at the Long Beach Model T swap meet this weekend with it plus lots more Model A stuff.
