  • Lincoln V12

I may be opening a new chapter in my life! My wife's cousin inherited a 47-48 Lincoln V12 and I may be come the one who starts it up (After about 40 years) I consider this to be a privilege, but I know nothing about them. Where can we go for info, parts, etc? I have read that they have big sludge problems and one engine I looked at had a hose from the manifold to the air cleaner. Also, they had oil problems back in 48, but is it that still that way with modern oils? Thanks in advance!

Terry, I would treat that like any other old car. Check and change fluids and possibly new battery. Pump the brake pedal, clean the air cleaner, etc. Make sure to drain at least a cup of whatever is in the oil pan into a clear container. This will tell you what the engine internals look like.

    Good luck.

You wana look waaay far up da road and plan yer route because the brakes are far more of a suggestion than a command!

Don't try and start it on bad gas or feed that junk into the carb. Disconnect the fuel line at the carb and start it on a gravity feed from a fresh little can. You can determine what is in the tank if anything by what gets pumped out of the disconnected fuel line. Put an extension hose on it and capture it in another can for evaluation.

If the gas is that OLD, I'd just drain it FIRST & see if you can somehow take a PEEK into the tank! I'd mount a LARGE, hose type injection filter, just ahead of the tank. Like the filter on an EARLY Datsun Z-car. Then you can run some FILTERED Gas, through the lines & the pump! For SURE, clean the CARB, they're EASY, almost like a Flathead Ford.
Once this is done, file the points, lube the Dist Cam, change oil & it'll probably start up like a CHAMP---There's NOTHING MYSTERIOUS about them!

It's the crap in the line that will get ya after refilling the tank with good gas. That's why it's best to pump it somewhere else. I also run them on spray while the gas pumps out of the line instead of using an aux tank

        Good thoughts K-dad

Well, there's about 80 miles between us! So I won't be running over there too often! And I'll probably have to take my wife along, Mike is her cousin, not mine! It will be an interesting job!

While I appreciate everyone's interest, What I need are specs. and other info. These are not so common, in fact they're downright rare. I don't need the the originals (Books, Pamphlets, etc.) Just the info. Thanks in advance! Terry

Well we made it but not without problems. Car did fine (except these damn brakes) until we hit this long, long, long, did I mention long uphill climb to Boon N.C. It was warm out. Car started missing and then quit. I could get it to restart but then it would quit when pulled out into traffic. I could see bubbles at the top of the glass fuel bowl. I opened the gas cap but made no difference....

New to me roadster quit on us tonight, carb question.

Ok, this morning I took a 30 mile round trip to Ron's Machine Shop in Shandon, OH to show them the car. Stopped on the way home and filled up with 5 gallons. We jumped in tonight to take a short drive and less than a mile from the house it started sputtering and finally quit. Got it started with choke and it idled for a while then quit. Pushing on gas pedal it is starving for gas. I am pretty sure...

1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe, 85 hp. V8. Holley 94 rebuilt carburetor, 59000 miles showing, but odometer is not working. Non ethanol gas is used.

Heads were removed for inspection. Engine appears to have never been overhauled based on inspection of pistons and valves. Pistons and valves heavy with dry carbon. Nothing wet around piston/valves. All pistons stamped STD and do not wiggle, do...

Does anyone know where I can get a fuel line made. I have an indented firewall CCPU, stock A manifold bored out with a Model B carb. which has the fuel line entering from the front, not the side like stock As do. I believe the fitting at the carb. is different as well....

                by Mitch
I'll start by saying do not attempt to run the motor on the fuel supply from the tank. Pumping debris or old crap gas into the carburetor is never a good thing. This can cause your valves and rings to stick. It will also mess up a good working carburetor.
Hang an auxiliary fuel supply with fresh gas gravity fed directly to the carburetor....

                Porting and polishing,
                by Terry, NJ
Because of the bad weather and Best's Gaskets haven't arrived yet, I needed something to do. I always have a project or two that I can switch to when needed. I had started P&P a couple of manifolds. They were bored out (The easy part). Now they needed polishing, this is the tedious part. Hours of going roundy, round, inside the runners till it's shiny and smoothe all around. Later on, I was going...

                by slammin
My tudor is parked in my heated shop, never below 42 degrees. I only start the 29 once every few weeks, take it out and put 3 or 4 miles on her. The last few times shes been tough to start and doesn't want keep running until I make a few attempts. It smells like it is running rich, but tends to backfire a few times before the idle smooths out. Once out on the road, I get a lot of vibration from the...

As a few of you know - I have a 1930 Town Sedan, Murphy Body (March 1930). And she's a little rough. My wife has already named her Millie. The engine hasn't run in some time and I want to attempt to get it started and see what all is wrong and needs to be fixed in the drivetrain. If I don't have to I don't want to drop the oil pan or remove the valve cover to see if I can get this started. The engine...

So lets say we have done the balance mod on the carb and we want to use a air cleaner. What is a good one to use? What about the issues with possible raw fuel fires?
