It's -1 here in Hillsboro. I'm on my 3rd cup of coffee trying to get the nerve up to go put wood in the outdoor furnace. I just stocked up on a nice load of hedge but it will only last about twelve hours at these temps.

Everytime I drive by a residence that has one of those outdoor furnaces, it reminds me of going out to the coal bin in Europe in the middle of winter...........bad memories!!!!

Our coal bin was in the basement, and I still remember the truck coming and sticking his shiny coal shut through the window, then raising the bed up to dump the rear half of the load. The truck box had a divider in the center of the box, so he could deliver coal to two customers on one trip. We moved from that house when I was 5, so that was the end of the coal. I never heard of storing the coal outside.

In the british isles and Ireland, the coal man delivers in 100 pound gunny sacks and the bins are outside and in West Ireland and still parts of Scotland in the highlands, peat is still used. Cut from a peat bog and stacked in a loose pile to dry out. Once dried out, it's carried by a peat basket or a pony drawn cart.
