It is too late to do what you did. Is seems that the only way, at this point, is to lightly file or sand the ends of the hood tubes on the top to eliminate or reduce paint chipping. Doing it your way seems like it would be good, but too late for me.

Thanks for the link to how other people dealt with the issue. Sanding the tube ends like Fred93 did, appears to be the best solution, since the hood is already painted.
I plan to use SS rods and oil the rods well when I assemble the hood panels. Hopefully that will help to eliminate or reduce paint chipping along with removing excess paint on the tube ends. The oil should help with potential rusting problems. Since the top panels to the louvered lower panels tubes are hidden when the hood is closed, paint chipping shouldn't be a big problem.

If you kept the spray gun nearly square to the face of the panel you shouldn't have an issue unless you got primer buildup in there and never knocked it down. Generally, it's primer buildup that chips. I avoided that on all edges, holes, etc.Leave a comment:

Hi Rusty,
I took and used the file to ends of the hood hinges before any painting was done. This allowed for some build up of primer and paint. I have not had any cracking or chipping of the paint over the past 14 years.

Hood and hinge paint chipping concern
I hope to assemble the hood panels and mount the doors on my 29 phaeton in the near future. I painted the hood panels separately and painted the doors off the car, so there is some paint between hood tubes and the two halves of the hinges. I am concerned about paint chipping on the ends of the hood tubes and the hinges where the the halves meet one another. I have heard that using a file and carefully removing the paint between the hood rod tubes at the top of the top panels and between the inside parts of the door hinges. If I do that, it will leave unprotected metal that could rust. I don't want to have rust streaks on the hood or door hinges in the future. If someone had the same concern as I do and found a good solution, would you reply as to how you did it and the results, especially preventing rust.

I have heard or read to take the center hinge rod out and paint the two halves. Should I also remove the other two hinge pins and paint as four separate pieces?
My Question is, how are they reassembled? Would the hinge rod then get destroyed upon reinserting them?
Also, do all three of the hinge rods get painted also?

Finally took the plunge and removed the 3 hood rods from our '29 Coupe. Set the hood straddling two plastic sawhorses, soaked the hinges with PB Blaster for about 1/2 an hour, then laid a blanket on the ground under each side panel. The side rods came out easy using an electric drill. I then laid the hood on a blanket on our deck and tapped the center rod out enough to get the drill on it. That is, I knew I could not hold back. Got it back from paint and can't wait to dink with it. Waiting for a hot day and a couple helpers to put the top on, so making busy with other stuff. Tonight was "hood night" I put new corners and rubber bumpers on the hood side panels. Put cowl/hood lacing on front edge of gas tank. Wired it in. Assembled the hood on a dry-run basis. The side panels on my hood are twisted as shown in the photos. I can only presume they are repops since there is no rust, dents or dings. If tackled incorrectly I expect the corrective action will only make it worse. How do I straighten them out ?...02-14-2022, 05:37 PM -
Well, got help and installed the Hood. Now I notice the smaller rods which hold the side panels are the hood length .. Wouldn't it be better to cut them so the tips don't sit on the lace, forcing the hood away from where it is supposed to rest ?12-10-2018, 10:52 AM -

Mitch-- I was surfing through some archived threads and came upon a photo you posted in 2018 which showed the inside and outside of a hood. The outside was maroon--actual color doesn't matter--, but the inside was clearly flat black. Is this the correct color scheme?...02-15-2022, 04:27 PM

On the right side only, after driving at speed, the right hood latches become unlatched. The latches and hinge appear to be in good condition and the hood acceptably aligned. The spring tension in the latches seems good and equal to those on the left. The radiator support rods are tight. I've only driven the car about 500 miles, but this is happening with increased frequency. Any ideas on how...You do not have permission to view this gallery.

I have four hood latches two have the seam in the barrel on the hood side and two have the seam on the fender side. All four might be reproduction as the hook that fits on the hood is not very well formed, they are kind of straight, not curved. How do I tell if they are original or not? On the center line of the hood there are 4 riveted hinges. 2 at the front and 2 at the rear. Are these available anywhere? I have two at the front that someone tried to weld but they cracked again.09-07-2018, 03:15 PM
