  • Brace & Larry's, 1930 CCPU Build Thread

From a basket case to a jewel..

    Part 1

This is a pictorial journey through a 1930 CCPU restoration by me and the next owner. I had to sell it partially completed because of my wife's health issues. It was bought by a gentleman in Missouri who is now in the final stages of the restoration. Brace's VFF Name is "Pickemup."

The pictorial demonstration starts with my end of the restoration. The second set of images are from Brace Bailey, who bought my partially restored CCPU. I called her "Pea Cup."

A presentation like this is rather unusual, and we all here at VFF hope you enjoy the trip.. Objective comments most welcome.

    Only on the VFF!

Part 2, Peacup at it's new home!!!

HI - I adopted “Peacup” from Larry J. I’ve done a lot of car projects - but only one other “true restoration” - a 1941 Ford Army Jeep. I’m finishing up a 1961 Corvette Restomod - meaning it looks like an original car but has later model corvette parts and an aftermarket frame. Everything has to be engineered and modified, as it just doesn’t fit.
I decided to start the Pickup project because I was ready for an easier build that would be more of a “replace the missing or worn out part with a nice new reproduction one - or original one if I can find it”

I’m now finding that most reproduction parts must have been built from a picture, and
Most don’t fit well... Like you guys didn’t already know that.

So, the journey continues - while Larry did most of the mechanicals - engine, rearend,
Transmission, and drive line, I’m about sourcing all of the rest of the missing parts and continuing the build. It’s a little more difficult since I didn’t tear down an original Model A, and some things are just different.

My biggest surprise is how many great guys are out there (and on the Forums) to help.
I was invited to a weekly breakfast of “Northland Model A’ers” by a guy named Chili...
And met 16 new friends at the Big Biscuit in Liberty MO.

I’ll keep updating Mitch and the VFF’ers as I progress.
                    Thanks for looking!

Long trip from Iowa to Liberty, Missouri. Had to stop right after we left Larry’s house to tie down the fan
blade… It was spinning like mad. Last picture is the load the next morning.

                      1. Top and cab wood - Missing a few pieces
                      2, Upgrading from the ’28 Model A wheels with 16” rims… to 19”.
                      3. Starting on the Cab - rear wood across the top was first install & nail
                      4. Larry did a nice Job on the steering wheel. I added the shift knob from my son’s 65 Mustang

                        Cab wood going on….

Lots of patch panels have been welded in…. the rear one too low
Firewall needs a lot of work. Had to push it out about 1” in the middle

Bed - lots of rust holes after Larry had it sandblasted.
                        Rear U channel shot
                        Cab wood done.
Stained and finished - now will be completely hidden.

Bought some Deluxe front fenders and running boards that had been in a fire. Test mount - new wheels & tires

Off topic…. I spent 19 years on the 34 Tudor street rod below…. Wife says the CCPU has to be stock….

                          Pictures of the chassis
Lots of pictures of the cab. It helps when you can roll the cab over in all directions.…..
Floors had been replaced. Everything else was sandblasted, but bent or dented.

Test fit the new white oak in the bed. Strips will be changed out to stainless (which are too wide….)

Two shots of the new plastic fan. Installed a 12v alternator after a wrinkle black paint job….

Used my Cherry Picker and Corvette harness to lift the cab - tilted it over the steering wheel

Starting to look like a pickup.
Have you ever seen an uglier color for a hood? I decided to go with paint remover on the hood.
There are a lot of louvers to scrape. It took 3 coats with putty knives in between.

My wife was good enough to hold the cab still in the trailer - while I drove across the road to the “paint shop”

After I had painted the Visor, I discovered 30+ nail holes that weren’t suppose to be there…. fill & repaint.
Then I shot it off the end of my buffer wheel…. and had to repaint it again. what a PIA

                                  Finished Visor….
Buffed out the Bed (not easy)
Quick commercial for Harbor Freight… the hole punches are cheap, and really help on gaskets and welting.

When I installed the bed wood with the new stainless strips and rear-end cover… the boards suddenly didn’t fit.

The stainless strips are 1/8” wider than standard, which makes the boards too far apart to bolt up to the cross members.
SO… I had to tape them up for reference, and run them through my table saw to widen the groves.

Next.. The windshield. Going with green tint. Discovered it didn’t fit because I had a 28/29 hinge on it.
The earlier hinge lowers the windshield frame about 3/8” - it will hit the gas cap when opening it. Snyder
                                  pictures of the difference.

Last two pictures… I machined the notch in the arms for the detent on the floor air… Make sense?

                                    Some misc things:

Back to the Visor… had a little shimming to do on the right corner

Sealing up the steering box - include the screws (thanks Mitch). Had to grind
about 1/16” off the base plate to get the can to close.

                                    Bad parking job at Walmart….

And my 95 year young helper after setting the new running boards and mounting
                                    the cab.

                                    All for now….

Thanks to Larry and Brace for this great build thread. I for one am looking forward to the finishing pictures as the completion nears. You both do spectacular work and make a great tag team. I'm sure it means a lot to Larry that his project is in great hands and he can watch it get completed right here on the VFF. That is real cool IMO

                                      just my 2 cents

I was quite an honor and experience to be able to contribute. The only part missing is your objective comments. We are especially interested if this presentation helped anyone. That's what the VFF is all about..

Not only will it help people now, but also into the future. That is one of the things that sets the VFF apart from the rest, the huge technical sections etc for future reference for generations to come, easily accessed, and loaded with pix

Okay I have a few constructive questions that you requested:

First off in pic #1 I know it's not the 30 CCPU that is mosquito cropping the field, so did you blow the motor on the tow vehicle?

Second, how come you reused the original steel drums and did not upgrade to cast iron?

Third, Why reuse 85 year old springs?

Yea, Larry, why didn’t you update the drums?
Also, It looks like the studs were brazed in, not swedged. Now I’m wondering if I can re-use the hubs for cast iron drums, or if I have to replace everything... (comments?)

The tow truck ahead of the CCPU was scheduled for an engine overhaul the next day.

The steel drums were 15.015. Did not need to buy new ones. Henry thought they were ok..

Springs came from Snyders. Never installed. Would guess a little "shelf time."

                                          Next?
