How do I remove the horn button and light switch on a 30 A?

  • #2
Put a yardstick through the steering wheel to keep downward pressure on the horn rod. Unsnap the bail wire off the switch and pull the switch off. press upward on the spider and remove the C clip, then the spider and spring will come off. Now you can slide the horn rod out of the steering column, if you have the top down on an open car. Everything else will need the steering to be lowered or removed.

Disconnect the battery first of course.

Craig be aware that at the top of the column there should be a little brass bushing that enables the horn rod and the steering wheel to turn independently of each other.

    Replacing Horn Button and Escutcheon
    by Oldgearz
I have an early 30 Coupe. The horn button sticks. I want to remove the light switch and the spider retainer so I can pull the light switch rod up about 2 feet so I can unbend the horn button escutcheon tangs. Can I do this as described so I don't need to pull the steering column.

    Horn/light switch rod length
    by Poor Boy
Good morning Guys. Is there any way to measure the length of the horn/light switch rod with it still assembled in the car? I am working on my 31 coupe. The steering box has some play in it and leaks at the sector shaft. I do have a rebuilt box and steering column in my parts. They are both two tooth Gemmers. The only difference that I see is at the top where the spark and throttle levers...

    Horn Rod Disassembly
    by conaway2
The car horn sounds sick - will barely spin up enough to do a good ah-oogah. However, if I remove the light switch housing from the steering column and short the spring-loaded horn button in the light switch to ground, the horn sounds great, indicating a high-resistance situation in the horn rod circuit.

I’ve removed the rod from the steering column, have bent the 4 tabs under the...

    Horn Ground
    by WMWS
Where exactly does the horn make ground. Is it at the top just under the button. My horn wants to blow all the time. Is it grounding somewhere at the top or in the column somewhere and if so how do you get in there. I have taken the c clip and spider off the bottom and pushed the rod up but don't see how you would get the horn button off. Any suggestions. Thanks

How far does the switch go up into the steering column housing where horn rod is? Does it go flush? This repo is tight!! I think it needs to go further. How will I know the tabs on the spider are in well enough? I have horn at 6 o/clock

and then frustration set in....no horn
    by emac
I have been making great progress getting the 30CCPU back together. Finished wiring and testing the blinkers and headlights. Everything was working great, so I trimmed and wrapped the wiring. I gave myself 5 stars for the job.

As I was cleaning up, I remembered the horn. I figured I would give it a test. Nothing. Checked the wiring diagram, and I have power on both wires going to the...

    Assembling horn/light switch spider
    by Oldgearz
I looked briefly for concise instructions for how to assemble the horn/light switch spider and couldn't find info. So I invented my own and will pass them on. This assumes light switch is wired for inside light handle to be in "off" position when it is at 6:00 and low and high beams one click left and right. Always note orientation of spider forks in relation to the orientation of the...
