Put a yardstick through the steering wheel to keep downward pressure on the horn rod. Unsnap the bail wire off the switch and pull the switch off. press upward on the spider and remove the C clip, then the spider and spring will come off. Now you can slide the horn rod out of the steering column, if you have the top down on an open car. Everything else will need the steering to be lowered or removed.
Disconnect the battery first of course.

by Poor BoyGood morning Guys. Is there any way to measure the length of the horn/light switch rod with it still assembled in the car? I am working on my 31 coupe. The steering box has some play in it and leaks at the sector shaft. I do have a rebuilt box and steering column in my parts. They are both two tooth Gemmers. The only difference that I see is at the top where the spark and throttle levers...

by conaway2The car horn sounds sick - will barely spin up enough to do a good ah-oogah. However, if I remove the light switch housing from the steering column and short the spring-loaded horn button in the light switch to ground, the horn sounds great, indicating a high-resistance situation in the horn rod circuit.
I’ve removed the rod from the steering column, have bent the 4 tabs under the...-

by WMWSWhere exactly does the horn make ground. Is it at the top just under the button. My horn wants to blow all the time. Is it grounding somewhere at the top or in the column somewhere and if so how do you get in there. I have taken the c clip and spider off the bottom and pushed the rod up but don't see how you would get the horn button off. Any suggestions. Thanks

When i push up on the spider the whole rod moves is this correct????? and there isnt really any spring resistance, it seems...

by rheacoxMy car has always had an intermittent horn issue even back before I could drive. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Can usually get it working again by jiggling the light switch, turning it to high beam and then back off, etc. I tested the horn button and it has good continuity. I know the rod had a good kink in it but I tried to straighten it out when I had the box apart but to no avail....

by conaway2While recently trying to disassemble the horn rod on the car I’ve owned since 1967, I broke the horn rod where it joins the light switch handle. After bending the 4 tabs on the horn button bezel straight up, I wasn’t able to remove the bezel without applying quite a bit of force....resulting in the broken rod. I now have a repro horn rod installed, which works great, but it looks too new and...
