FYI this weekend nascar is using straight cut gears and not using the clutch to change from 4th to 3rd and back to 4th! If you want to see how they shift with out using a clutch and shift straight cut gears watch the race!

by JohnB15632I am familiar with double clutching, I was required to do this in the firetruck that I drove when I was much younger. Now, I am understanding that the Model A transmission must use double clutching.
Now, why must double clutching be used? I have never been told why it must be used.
Can anyone out there explain this to me?
Much thanks,-

by gasgas250I am on here to seek the advice of people who know much more about these cars than I do. I inherited a 1930 Ford Model A. It is a coupe and appears to be in good condition. Starts easy and cruises 45-50. There does seem to be an issue with the clutch or transmission. After the vehicle starts, it will shift smoothly but after 5 minutes or so of operation, upshifting into second gear is notchy. It...You do not have permission to view this gallery.

by BillEbob'31 Vicky -- getting to the point where I (shortly) won't be able to shift it (various medical conditions.)
Re-built engine only has @ 10k miles.
W/O a total drivetrain replacement, what is the most straight forward A/T install?
How about a Ford C-3 or C-4?

by FixitphilJust lately my stock transmission has been grinding a lot going into 2nd and 3rd in my 1931 Sedan.
I have a 1931 Sport Coupe with stock tranny but am not having the same problem.
My technique has always been to shift slowly in the Sedan or Coupe between gears (not double shift) and I have zero to little grinding.
On the Sedan I've tried double shifting; slow shifting and am...-

by Mike85212My car is a ‘31 Slant Window Sedan. It does have a lightened flywheel and a V-8 clutch. Stock transmission. Whenever I shift from first to second if I continue to push the shifter forward it will continue and grind gears as if the clutch wasn’t working. I only have this problem going into second. If I stop it will easily shift into second ....only when I go through second. I have been driving...

by ThosdMy A is off of the jacks and I have been learning how to double clutch my shifts. I live on hill and start out going down the hill when leaving the driveway. I have no problem double clutching the up shift on flat ground (down shift double clutching with rev matching is also no problem). However, on the downhill starts I was grinding the 1 - 2 shift when double clutching. I tried not shifting to 2nd...

While reading "Model A Ford, Construction, Operation, Repair, For the Restorer" by Victor W. Page during Rice harvest in California this past month...towards the back he talks about several different items used for speeding up the Model A Ford.
In one part he talks about a "Self-Operating Clutch" and the "Cartwright Automatic Gear Shift".
Just...-

by rivcokidHello all. Recently, my 31 roadster has become difficult to shift without grinding - sometimes severely and especially at a stop going from neutral to first. Found that the clutch arm was broken, so replaced it and adjusted the clutch and now - it's worse! In fact, one time it wouldn't even shift into first. Second and third gears are better, but they do grind too. I have the idle set very low...

by BTERRY1I took my Tudor to work Thursday. It is roughly 20 miles each way. It was uneventful overall which is good, but the strangest thing happened on the drive home. I’ve been driving manuals my entire life and gotten really good at down shifts in the A. When I began my return trip home after a full day at the office, it grinds during shifting, even up shifts. No matter how gentle I am or how low I let...

by Keith TrueI have a 28 with a multi disc clutch that has just started hanging up.It was fine around Christmas, but when I took off with it a couple of days ago it started hanging up while shifting. What's interesting is that I can push the pedal down and stick it into any gear without so much as a click. It's the 1-2 and 2-3 shift while moving. This isn't a light oil kind of hangup, this is like no disengagement...
