: jist "asked"--"If this is gonna' be LOOOONG, I gotta' go "P" first"--He "thinks" he's my spel checkur, I "HUMOR" him:p
Pat taught me to write in NUMBERED "BULLET" statements. It's EASY to go back & find the GOOD ones & EASY to discount the really DUMB ONES.
1 We've read LOTS of stuff about re-babbitting, what material mix, tinning processes, proper oil grooves, etc.
2 Back in the Old Days, when line boring equipment wasn't common, were the MAINS just SCRAPED, until they fit?
3 What material did they use? Was it a blend of melted lead Soldiers, fishin' Sinkers, Buckshot, Wheel weights, Scrap Solder, left over Body Lead, or WHAT???
4 Was there an "APPROVED" design for OIL GROOVES?
5 Chief had a set of "HOMEMADE"?? scrapers, one would shave the hair off your ARM! Never remember him scraping MAINS, but vaguely remember him fitting a Re-Babbitted rod.
6 We all know the Model A crankshaft is sorta' a WEAK link, looks a lot like some bar stock, heated & bent!
7 Now we have rebuilders doing PRIMO Babbitt & even INSERTS---That's why building a proper engine costs BIG BUCKS!!
8 Guru Claude (RIP) bought an almost finished '29 Pickup, with a "QUALITY"??? rebuilt engine. BUT, it knocked & he couldn't find WHY! He even brought 2 pistons & rods to "SHOW & TELL".
9 He put it back together & it still KNOCKED! He called me & I was ONLY his Assistant Guru of Stuff! Went over & tried Chiefs' OLD TRICK, shorted #2 & #3 at the same time & it wuz GONE!!
10 He opened it & the Center Main had BOOKOODLES of clearance, shim pack was UNDISTURBED, "apparently" the Builder FORGOT to ADJUST it!!!
THANK YOU for bearing with me, the Dog
: "sed" "It only took him 17 Seconds to read it"! Took me a SOLID HOUR to tipe it!
I did this, just to make you Ponder & Think about STUFF. Cindy sez I have TOO MUCH TIME on my HANDS, smart assed KID!
