  • Powder Coat Finishes/ primers

For those who are considering powder coat, check out the Tiger Drylac website before using your applicator . Colors are listed as well as a good description of the primers for cast alum / steel or non - porous materials. Sherman Williams also has some comparison tables for the trade for the various primers offered.. Some vendors don't or won't use primers, especially for wire wheels.

I just had my frame blasted and primered. Thought it would be too expensive to ask have it powder coated. Afterwards, turned out price was pretty reasonable for what they has done so I said go ahead and powder coat. They said they'd first have to blast it again to get the primer coat off. I didn't go that direction.

Forgot to mention that after discussions with company rep's, the primers have to be subject to the higher temps (375 F +), so older non - PC compatible primers need to be removed.

After calling several Powder Coaters for my five (5) Model A 1930 wire wheels, and listening to the many different sales pitches, I decided to trust this one (1) guy with his one (1) man shop who said he was extremely busy; however, he always first epoxy coated all of his ferrous metal work after removing all old paint, grease, and rust followed by blasting metal.

Most items I saw upon arrival in his shop were very expensive items of all sorts; however, extremely well done.

I showed him my Tiger Drylac sample where he picked up the phone to call his powder coat supplier who said he could provide the same color with the exact same powder that is sold to Tiger Drylac; but at half price.

One never knows who to trust, nor the end results; however, today, my powder coated wheels still look new.

My go to guy for powder coating wheels has quit doing powder, so I have been soliciting quotes from local places who do it. The first price came in this morning and it was a real shock at $160.00 per wheel, with $100.00 off a set of 5 if I provide the powder. Does anyone know of a good source in the Detroit area? I may have to blast them at home and use conventional paint.

The wheel on the left was sitting out side hanging on the wall behind my garage. It gets a little rain, and a little bit of sun, mostly in the morning. I was doing some cleanup and when I walked by it, I was shocked at the teal color. I have six wheels and I believe they were double powder coated at a workshop. I had the flu so I wasn’t there. It just surprised me that this one, that’s been...

I'm going for powder coating my 19" wheels/rims A Ford Vermillion Red to compliment the Ford Maroon Briggs '30 Town Sedan body.

Can anyone help me get the most accurate Ford Vermillion RAL code and/or company for powder coat? I'm a typical male red-green color blind guy (this is common); so you say, "if you're color-blind, why do you care?", I just want it to be right....

My 31 Roadster came with 2 spare tires, so I have a total of 6 wheels to paint. I found a business that will powder coat them for a reasonable cost, but the guy wants to know how much powder he will need to order. He said he will probably put 2 coats on each wheel. Does anyone have an idea of how much powder would be required to coat 6 wheels with 2 coats each?

Depending on available funds, am considering powder coating Black my truck's; Headlight Shells, Radiator, Stone Guard, and Cowl Band. I like to be different, most trucks I see are not Black, and personally kind of like the look. I like the chrome/nickel/stainless too.

Currently they are not painted. I do not know if they are nickel, chrome, or stainless.

            Are there difficulties...

Any favorites in terms of powder coaters in the North Bay (Ca.)? Willing to go south to South S.F., east to Oakland(ish) and north to Sacramento. Not getting a good feeling about my local vendor.

Rim liners necessary after powder coating?

I dropped off my freshly powder coated wheels and radial 19’s and balancing beads and rim liners to my trusted tire guy just now. He just called me back and said the rim liners are not necessary where the inside of the rims are so nice. He said they may even cause problems.
Is there a problem with not using them?...
