Any way to see if a speedo works out of the car? Got a good deal on one and just came in the mail today. Original '28-29...

I use a phillips bit on a drill right on the back of it where the cable would screw on... the bit grabs it enough ... spin it in reverse if i recall

I always roll the trip wheels to check the red tenths wheel. The black numbers are usually fine, but you can often see faded out red digits. About 15 years ago I was at the pre war swap meet in Iowa, and a guy had two mint 28-9 speedometers for $25 each. I didn't need one, so foolishly I didn't buy them. Good parts are good trading stock.

                  Straight line calculation:
                  1,000 cable RPM = 60MPH
                  750 cable RPM = 45MPH
                  500 cable RPM = 30MPH
                  250 cable RPM = 15MPH

How would I check the accuracy of the speedometer. If I’m doing 45 (speedo) and the limit is 55 nobody wants to pass me.

                    Speedo not moving...
                    by Beauford
Ok so I went for a short cruise as my vehicle is not DMV approved yet. The rebuilt speed does not work. It bench tested beautifully with a drill. I insert cable in speedo first and then the underside. I have rear on jackstands and it will go for a second and its like the cable jumps out. I'm assuming the speedo end. Any suggestions?

                    Dash from my car...
                    by KB9JLO
There is still life here. Albeit slow. Working on water outlet. Hope to have it installed this weekend.
I took the dash out to start the wiring. It had a 30 amp ammeter but the screws on the back would spin when you tried to unfasten the wires! So I ordered a new one from Snyders. It was loose in the dash and the needle was stuck at the bottom. I emailed them and they said that they fall off...

                    Northeast speedo cable
                    by Flathead
I have a round face Northeast speedo, it has male threads for the cable. Apparently all the other speedos have female threads and I can't find a source for a cable. The pick-up is a '30 and has the keyed cable end at the torque tube. I am building a Pick-up basket case and don't have every little piece for it. Yes I could put in a different speedo, but at one time the part I need must have existe...

                    Speedo Cable
                    by Fixitphil
Henry tells me in his "Model A Instruction Book" that I should lube the speedo cable every 5,000 miles. I don't know if mine has ever been lubed but I want to do all "Henry" says. What is the most effective way to perform this vital fete?
He also tells me that I should lube and re-calibrate the speedo itself every 10,000 miles?? Newby that needs some help!
                    Thanks, ...

                    speedo cable puke
                    by Aretino
I have my speedometer removed for repair. While driving the car with the speedo cable disconnected and the cable hanging on the lip of the instrument panel, there is lubricant at the end of the open cable sheath and seeping out. Any ideas why the lubricant is climbing up the cable?

                    Part Warning
                    by DaWizard
Since this is the second speedo cable I have purchased from Moss, I was informed they get them from Snyder's, so I am sending out this warning. The internal cable for the 28/29 is too short if you use the stock outer cable!!

It will fit but when pushed all the way into the depth of the turtle, it is short in making it all the way into the speedo square and you need it all the way into

Help removing Speedo cable from Fordomatic
                    by CSPIDY
I am having a dickens of a time getting the speedometer end out of the transmission on my 57 bird. The clip came off with ease but adapter is stuck tight in the tranny. I’ve pre soaked with PB blaster but still won’t budge. I will try some heat. Just don’t want to destroy it.

                    Speedometer fix, got lucky
                    by BTERRY1
My speedo has not worked, and it never did for the last owner either. I decided to dig in to it today. I removed it from the transmission, while topping it off, and the "key" (not sure what to call it) on the end of the cable was not secure so it spun but the cable did not. I crimped it back on, installed it, and presto the speedo works. I thought I would put it out there for people...
